Shelter memo and intake
Why the county put this dog on the priority list, and how they arrived.
9/16/2026 09/16/26 14:12 Due to a prior bite and related circumstances, canine requires placement in a secure, well-managed environment. Placement with a New Hope Partner is required by close of business 9/21/26 to ensure appropriate behavioral support and reduce risk of recurrence. May be at risk for euthanasia 9/22/26 or sooner if warranted. Intake 9/10/2026 What is the reason for surrender? PER SOURCE, ASSISTED LIVING IS NOT THE BEST SITUATION FOR THIS DOG THAT HAS LIVED HIS ENTIRE LIFE UNTIL 11 MONTHS AGO IN A HOUSE WITH A LARGE YARD. THE CONFINED SPACE WAS HARD ON THE DOG, THE AGING OWNER IS UNWELL AND IT WAS VERY HARD ON HER TO KEEP THE DOG AT THE FACILITY. NO YARD AND THE MANAGER WAS NEVER PLEASED TO HAVE HIM THERE, THEY WERE CONFINED TO A BEDROOM UNLESS LEASHED TO GO OUT. How long have you had your pet? 10+ YEARS Where did you get this animal from? BREEDER. ATTEMPTED TO RETURN PET TO THE BREEDER, NO REPLY. Is your pet spayed/neutered? AUGUST 31 Has the animal shown any signs of aggression toward people or animals? NO, HE WILL GROWL A WARNING IF SOMETHING IS AMISS, BUT NOT AGGRESSIVE. Has the animal ever seriously injured or caused the death of another animal? NO How is the animal around children? HE HAS BEEN AROUND CHILDREN OF ALL AGES (0-ADULT) AND WITH SUPERVISION AND RESPECT, HE LIKES KIDS. HE SPENT AN EXTENDED STAY, MORE THAN 3 WEEKS WITH A PET SITTER AT HER HOUSE. SHE HAS 2 DOGS AND 5 CHILDREN AGE 2-11. A4060980 WARMED UP TO ALL BUT ONE OF THE DOGS. AND THEY KEPT THEM SEPARATED. Please describe behavior around children? CAUTIOUS AND THEN LOVING. IT TAKES HIM TIME TO WARM UP TO ANYONE, AND IF GREETED RAPIDLY OR WITH ROUGH PLAY HE WILL RETREAT AND POSSIBLY GROWL. PATIENCE, KINDNESS AND UNDERSTANDING THAT HE HAS BEEN THROUGH ALOT AND HIS PREVIOUS OWNER WAS UNWELL. THE SITUATION THAT HAS BROUGHT HIM TO THE SHELTER WAS NOT HIS FAULT. A GOOD BOY.
Behavior evaluations
Written by handlers, dated, in their words.
9/16/2026 Handlers approached kennel front dog was laying down relaxed. Handler called to dog and presented leash, dog remained laying down. Handler was able to open kennel and drape leash over head, dog stood up and stretched. Leash fell off dogs neck and then dog walked around in kennel and then approached gate. Handler was able to verbally coax forward and place leash and secure. Once leash was secure handler opened gate. g pulled strongly (for size) to exit of room. Dog was tense in posture and had full pilo but ignored occupied kennels in passing. Dog stopped immediately once on gravel and urinated. Handler then guided dog to PY and released after adjusting stopper and attaching extension leash. Both handlers sat on bench while do decompressed and sniffed around PY. Dogs posture neutralized with time and remained relaxed. Dog defecated and allowed handler to approach to clean up. Handler returned to bench, dog approached and sniffed handlers and walked away. Dog briefly paced exterior fence line and then would pace perimeter. Dog approached assistant handler, took treat from hand and allowed petting. After some time handler retrieved leash and walked dog back to kennel. Lead handler was able to pet dog without issue and place clip leash. Dog pulled moderately on return and entered kennel without issue. Handler used clip leash to remove leash. 09/16/26 14:13 Updating color due to NHO status. 8/31/2026 Came in on leash, stiff tense body, flagging tail, lip licking, exit seeking, did not solicit attention or pets, vaccinated using precautionary muzzle wrap, walked to kennel on leash, leash left on.
