Nova

County ID A5167332

Deadline: Thursday, September 10.

Nova is a year-old black and white lab mix who landed here because of allergies in the home. She was affectionate and easygoing with her family, including small children, but the world outside made her anxious. Other dogs set her off hard—barking, pulling, hackles up—and she has a history of reactivity that means she needs someone who understands what that looks like and how to work through it.

What the shelter has seen

  • Soft and wiggly in kennel, took treats gently, knows sit, let handlers pet her and walk her on leash
  • Raised hackles and alarm-barked at a dog through a fence during evaluation, redirected with moderate leash pressure and settled once moved away
  • Owner for two months said she's gentle with kids as young as two, playful with the eight-year-old, friendly with adults, housetrained and crate trained
  • On walks she pulled hard toward other dogs, barked nonstop at them, couldn't settle until they were out of sight
  • Jumped up when excited, strong puller on leash

What Nova needs

This is not a beginner's dog and we will not pretend otherwise. Nova needs an experienced handler, no other dogs, and the time to decompress and learn that she doesn't have to react to everything. She is New Hope Only, which means she must be pulled by a partner rescue before end of business September 10th.

Everything here comes from Nova’s Maricopa County Animal Care and Control record. We leave out the parts that belong between the shelter, the rescue and the vet, and we do not soften what a dog needs. If something changes at the shelter, this page changes with it.
