Coco lived his four years mostly in a backyard, and the loss of that routine has left him shut down and head-shy in a concrete kennel. He comes when called and allows handling, but the fear is written all over him. Underneath the shutdown is a dog who got along with his sibling and knew his people, who just never learned to live indoors or trust a hand coming toward his face.

What the shelter has seen
- Lived outside for most of his life with limited human interaction, never housebroken
- Was friendly with his sibling dog and lived in a home with six people, though kept separate from the young children
- In the shelter, approaches handlers when called but flinches and pulls away from head touches, will allow body pets briefly before moving off
- Freezes and thrashes when being walked back toward his kennel, settles with coaxing but clearly finds the shelter environment frightening
- Not food or toy motivated during evaluations, spends time pacing and panting with low tail wags
What Coco needs
This is not a beginner's dog and we will not pretend otherwise. Coco needs a foster with experience in fear-based behavior, a quiet home with patience for a dog who has never been inside, and no expectation of quick progress. He must be pulled by a New Hope Partner rescue by close of business September 14th.
